Family lore has it that my grandfather, in addition to family
needs, made enough wine to supply ALL (local Catholic) church
requirements. It was not considered illegal (or authorities
looked the other way) to do so. As told me, there was never
any local shortage of alcoholic needs of any kind (at least
in NY). The Germans developed the basement mini breweries, the
Irish made their home brew whiskies and the Italians, wine and
liquors. All festive occasions were well supplied with whatever
was needed. Prohibition was never taken serious by the common
folk who took great pleasure in the cottage trade...........!
