As Phil pointed out, the figures have to be correct and verifiable. Apart
from the "truth in advertising" laws, it's a common practice to
get out on the autobahn, floor the accelerator and leave it there for 5 or
10 minutes at a time. Any car that doesn't get within a few percent of the
listed top speed is going to get a very bad reputation.

I've had my own car(*) (a bit over 200 hp on a cold day) up to 225 km/hr
(140 mph). It was still accelerating, but I ran out of road. The "big
turbo" model, about 215 hp in standard tune, will quickly hit the rev
limiter in top gear at 240 km/hr (150 mph) on a race track, according to an
acquaintance of mine in the UK. After some minor mods he hit 160.9 mph at
Elvington airfield (standing start, 1.2 mile) in 2003. At the same event a
Honda NSX hit 165 mph and a BMW M3 hit 167 mph.

(*) The 4wd turbo version of what you know as a Mazda Protege, 90-95 model.
