Greg, I don't believe there is any problem in mixing gold fish with algae
eaters, if by algae eater you meant a chineese algae eater. the small
fantails did not eat him, he probably jumped out, or if you have a rock, may
be hiding. check the filter intake, and see if he squirmed in there if he
was particularily small.
Gold fish need more water than a 2 gallon tank, though. You could probably
get by with keeping them in there, but do frequent water changes. Fantails
can grow quite large. But my feeling is, hey, their only gold fish. if you
like them, then keep them there *smile*. More than likely your 2 gallon
tank gives them more water per fish than what they had at the pet store.
