Not merely that but almost every major engagement of the US mil since ww2
has been lost or drawn on the basis of "ifs".

Korea - "If the PLA comes in behind the NK'ers" Vietnam -
"If the Viet Mihn/NVA defeat the South & unify the country"
Iraq - "If they have wmd, If they welcome us, If they don't engage in
insurgent warfare, if they don't break down into civil war "
