Two reasons:

a) Aerodynamics.  The Type 44 remains one of the slippiest cars ever built
- cw below 0.32

b) Regular service.  Mixture adjusted every week, OXS sensor changed every
40,000 miles, etc.

The third trick is how you drive.  Just imagine you're in a semi with a
100-yard braking distance - the instant you see any kind of slowing, you
come off the gas.  The Type 44 has a decelleration shutoff valve - as soon
as the system sees no acclerator input and high inlet vacuum pressure, it
"shunts" the inlet air mass sender to cut the fuel completely.

They are truly great cars for fuel economy, but there's quite an effort
involved in keeping quite complex economy measures working properly.
