Hello Anthony!

AW>> Yeah that's a good incentive. My experience is that you can get away

AW>> with a fair bit. The average Joe in a car doesn't want to make a mess

AW>> of his duco and deal with the delays and possible charges if they do

AW>> squash a cyclist. I've always gambled on this train of thought. I've

 AW>> been right thus far.

AM> I think you over rate most peoples tolerance of cyclists. Frankly,

AM> every time I see one up ahead and I'm in the left lane I curse them...

 AM> Luckily I drive a narrow car...

Or what?... It's an interesting phenomena that reasonable people

turn into buggers that think they own the road as soon as they throw a

leg over a bike. Just as interesting is the phenomena of the meekest

mildest person in the world turning into Mad Max when they have a ton

of motor car underneath them. The funniest thing I've ever heard was a

motorist claiming that I was intimidating him during an animated

conversation. Me on an 8Kg bike, him in a fully enclosed 1 ton plus

car.

Perhaps the roads you are talking about aren't suitable for bicycle use

in their present form. When I was working at West Pennant Hills, there

was no way I would have considered commuting on Epping and Pennant Hill

Roads. They simply weren't and aren't suitable for that purpose. I

recognized that and left the bike at home. I'm lucky with my present

route in that it is reasonably viable. There are one or maybe two

squeeze points, where some degree of tolerance is required from

motorists. I spend the majority of the journey being slowed down by

cars though. Inconsiderate bastards.

Regards, Alan
