Hello Thurston -

CA>> I think what Tom was describing points out that "the good
CA>> old days" weren't all that "good"?

TA>>> I wonder why none of the linux distros can't match that
TA>>> path to get more non-nerd users envoled with linux?

CA>> Windows is too close to satisfying non-nerds requirements
CA>> and it comes pre-installed with 100s of acquaintances that
CA>> have used Windows and are available for advice at no
CA>> charge at work, at play, even at home. :-)

TA> That may have been true because Apple/Mac priced its self
TA> too high, and Commodore shot it self in its trip from Pet

Amiga.

TA> but with deflation faceing us; Linspere may make to the
TA> mass market world of competion that makes our world go
TA> around. There now three big marketers selling systems
TA> useing linspire and six now selling the OS over the counter.

TA> (My viewpoint may be warped by the significant number of
TA> academics here in the Boston-Cambridge area who support
TA> Linuxs rather than microsoft. We have three user groups I
TA> am aware of.)

The OS is only one part of the package. If there are few
software applications or those that do exist are not 'complete'
enough then numbers who use this/that/the other OS are not
relevant.

Linux seems to be strong as an OS for use on a server but for
other purposes not as complete. The situation is improving for
Linux to do more than just operate servers but today as we type
Linux needs more improvement in the other areas.

If we were to work backwards starting with a list of what do we
want to produce using our computer (graphics, music, printed
documents, etc.) and then name software we know of that can do
those things with what we know (not a steep learning curve) I
think Windows would be chosen by most computer users. Many of
which could care less what the OS is that will execute that
software, those applications, or even those games because they
don't spend that much time with the underlying OS.
