What, indeed. "People" don't always agree with their Government.
For example, over the years many of our politicians have tried to figure
out ways of ending the nuclear ban. They've advanced carefully reasoned
arguments why it should be ended. But "the people" refuse to
countenance it. Polls continue to show it would be political suicide for
any political party trying it. We collectively see the reasons that it was
initially imposed as still being valid. We understand the sanctions and
disadvantages which it places us under, and we choose to accept that price.
I'll point again to this, which sums up current feeling here, to show that
I'm not by any means alone in my opinion:
