My mother was trying to obtain a phone number for her sister, who had
recently moved. During the course of the conversation, the Dutch operator
made it clear that if my mother talked directly to the Dutch operator
without the US operator in between, they would disconnect. Since the US
operator didn't speak Dutch, they were stuck in the middle, and sure
enough, my mother spoke directly to the Dutch operator, who promptly hung
up.
