An engine designed to run optimally on a given octane rating fuel will not
run better on a higher octane fuel. Higher octane fuel does not have
significantly more energy per gallon than low octane fuel. It is simply
more resistant to detonation, which allows the engine to have a higher
compression ratio and thus BMEP (Brake Mean Effective Pressure), in other
words develop more power from each combustion cycle. Many performance-
oriented Euro cars are designed to run on a higher octane rating fuel than
that commonly available in the US. This might explain the difference -
higher compression ratio yields both more power and higher fuel economy.
