Alcohol has a high octane rating. Trouble is, you need about 2.2 times as
much alcohol per "cylinder full" compared with gasoline. So if
you replace 10% of your gasoline with alcohol, your mileage will drop 5%
(in theory).

On the face of it, it doesn't make sense - by adding 10% alcohol, you
should save 10% gas. But because you are using 20% more of the composite
fuel, you are overall using 8% more gasoline than if it were uncut. So I
question the accuracy of your 20% worse figure. Is that just your car, or
is it a statistic properly derived from a large sample?
