The EICAR string is something dreamt up by ... someone, can't remember who
(CARO?). It's used to check that anti-virus programs are working properly -

you write it to a file, and scan that file, then the programs that support it
(most) will report some variation of EICAR_TEST_STRING.
The clever bit is that it's actually executable.
