I have over 500 picture discs. It is only one small catagory of my album
collection. (I also collect colored vinyl, nude album covers, bootlegs,
especially from the 70's, as well as conventional 50's and 60's albums of all
types). Anyhow, if you could post a list of the discs you have, I can tell
you their worth.
Promotional discs, such as the Elvis Costello, Bruce Springstein, Star
Castle, Liar, Boston, or Saturnallia discs, which were often issued in
quantities of less than 1000 units, are the most valuable. Street discs are
not worth as much, but there are exceptions. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the
Moon, a street disc, often goes for more than 50 dollars. So does Boston's
disc. So does porn star "Seka's" disc. Imported discs, such as from the
band Eloy (A German band on Sky records) or Rhodeleus are also valuable; some
almost as valuable as some of the promo discs. Also more valuable than the
standard discs are those that came out from Punk and Alternative rock bands
in the mid and late 80's. By then, the picture disc had had it's day, so for
those few that came out in the late 80's, production runs were very small, so
their value is higher. Boxed sets are also valuable, like the 15 disc set of
the Beatles that came out in the mid 80's.
One of the things that makes a picture disc worth more is the artwork on the
disc. Picture discs with images from artists like Roger Dean (who did most
of the covers for the group YES), or Keith Parkinson, are worth more than
picture discs that have "ordinary" images on them like the Rod Stewart one.
Picture discs that have nudes, or comedy themes (such as the National Lampoon
one) also tend to go for a bit more than "ordinary" discs.
Finally, there are many 7-inch discs that are valuable. The Beatles "20 year
anniversary set" is quite valuable. (This was a series that came out from
1982 through 1990, which was a picture disc single of each major Beatle hit
released 20 years to the day after the original 45 came out.) There are also
7-inch picture discs of groups like Blonde on Blonde, or Brit Ekland, which
are quite valuable now.
It all depends on what you have. Post a list of the artist and title of each
picture disc you have, and I will try to provide you with a "guidebook" value
for each one.
