At one point, Duke Power had nearly 1.3 million customers without power (multiply by however many people were in those houses and businesses, and it all adds up). That total doesn't include the local utilities, REA Co-ops like the one I get my power from, and Carolina Power & Light customers that lost power. Crews are here from all over the southeast and from as far away as Indiana and Michigan helping get the power back on. I was lucky that mine was only out for about 24 hours. And very surprised when it came on then. It had gone out sometime Wednesday night (I could tell from the SETI stats since I bailed out of here the first time the lights flickered). I was periodically calling my house phone to check on it and was stunned when the answering machine actually answered Thursday afternoon.
