subject: Pro 46 Antenna Connector

I had the same problem with my old Uniden Bearcat 200XLT a few years ago
that I just had with my RS Pro-46 hand-held. Seems like it just wasn't
receiving like it should used to. I had long replaced the
"stock rubber duck" antenna, with an Icom dual-band base-loaded model
FA-14438 which works superior to the stock antenna. After some extensive
use, I noticed that signals were weak, so I replaced the Icom
with the stock ant. which was just as bad. For "coup de gras (sp?)," I
hooked the Pro-46 up to my base, then mobile antenna(s), and it just
didn't pick up very well at all! I did notice when I pushed and shoved a
little on the BNC connector mounted on the radio that signals picked up,
then dropped off. So, I carefully dismantled the unit, found the center
conductor completely disconnected from the circuit board, gingerly
soldered it back with a low-watt soldering pen, put the radio back
together and it works just fine!
I am very careful with my radio, and don't remember putting any stress
on the BNC connector, but obviously I did somehow.
Luckily it was an easy fix; The radio works just fine except for
cellular overload on 800 freqs. I'm told that's because it's a double
conversion receiver - if I opt for a triple conversion receiver I may
not have this cellular overload situation. I'm told the Pro-43, the AOR
2700 and 8000 don't have this cellular overload problem on 800 Mhz.
