The reason Julian asked about DOS printing is bacause he suspects you have
purchased an inkjet printers.  Most inkjets are effectively WinPrinters
which means they only print in GUI mode.

The result is

  copy file.prn lpt1

does nothing in either DOS or OS/2.

There are ways to get command line text mode printing to work, but they
all require shipping the file though an app that can convert the text file
to something a GUI only printer can handle.
