actually, i copied a MSDOS 5 command.com onto a PCDOS 5 boot disk and it
worked... however, i ran into troubles with win98se's command.com but it
was due to bad sectors on the floppy... i'm now hunting my original PCDOS 5
disk so i can try again...

FWIW: DOS 6 and up are the ones that (finally) don't care where command.com
resides on the disk(ette)... DOS 5 and lower do care and very much so...
