Normally it is/was a "major unit" e.g. a battleship or an
aircraft carrier or nowadays a nuke ballistic missile sub.

So for instance the Bismark vs Hood engagement was a "capital ship
engagement" in the traditional sense where Midway was in the new
carrier borne aircraft sense.

In the US case the names of states (e.g. California, Alaska etc) are
reserved for Capital ships.
