Thanks for the suggestion Mario.  I found the delete trick some time ago.
What actually caused the link problem was an in-line  NULL constructor in 
the .HPP file.  The object was included as a type in a collection 
class template and then of course cause the problem.  

Took a long time to finally figure out and will NEVER happen again.
