  Remove the explicit cast, for a start.  Pointers to derived classes
  can be implicitly converted into pointers to their unambiguous base
  classes.

  Since the example that you gave worked, could you give a beefier
  example that *doesn't* work ?  Then we'll tell you what's wrong (or
  you'll discover what is wrong yourself while trying to demonstrate the
  problem to us).
