One thing you can do with a dial-up connection is use two phone lines and
link two modems together. If they are both 56k modems, that will give you
112k speeds, which is comparable to entry level DSL, generally at 128k. The
speed would be subject to the phone line quality, though; and many 56k
modems can do no better than 44k over standard phone lines.

Of course, your ISP also needs to allow you to use multiple logins from one
account...
