So can the "trick to write to the 80th column" be taken care of as a
"programming thing" rather than the sysop having to edit each and
every ansi
that writes to that spot?

I guess that's what I was saying. I don't think the average sysop should have
to do it. There could be a check/verification and something done in the code
itself, so this situation would never arise again. Is that possible? If not,
fine.. I've known how to overcome this issue for years and can always pass the
word on to new sysops. But.. if it is, a one time fix would never bring up the
question again! :)
