MB>CN>I am interested in what others have to face when it comes to
MB>CN>homeschooling in their state. I have been told that PA has one of the
MB>CN>best laws protecting our rights. What do others face?
MB>In Indiana, all we have to do is take attendance. That's sort of dumb,
MB>but hey, if that's all they want to know, and that's all the info they
MB>want, I can oblige. We are to give our kids an education EQUAL to the
MB>public schools, since that hasn't (to my knowledge) been defined, I feel
MB>pretty lucky to live in Indiana. We have no teacher oversight. I am
MB>registered as a private school, and not as a homeschool. No
standarized MB>testing, we have a political climate of 8 ( one is
lousey, ten is the MB>best possible).I do not have to keep records, but
do anyways.
Being registered as a private school in PA would not work. I like that
all that is required for homeschooling is a high school diaploma. In
the private school sector when you reach 9th grade you have to have a
teacher certified in the subject they are teaching. (Now this might have
been for the private school my daughter had attended not state
requirement.) I must also add that the child must live under the care
of the home supervisor (me) so it can not be a "Grandma thing." My
husband is also able to be listed as a home supervisor even though I
do the majority of the teaching. If any thing long term happened to
me that I was not able to teach, He could step in the the state
would not interfere. What do you mean by "political climate"?
MB>Some local school supers. want the districts hoomeschoolers to give them
MB>a list of subjects being taught, some portfolio work, test grades and
MB>such. We do not have to do this, some homeschools oblige, others do
MB>not. I would not. Some do it to, hopefully, keep down persecution. I
MB>don't like the idea of giving this info, unless one has to.
We have to show portfolio work to the local superintendent. It is meant
for his eyes only. Therefore some homeschoolers to insure that this is
what is happening make an appointment and set as the superintendent
looks over the work, never leaving the portfolio out of their sight.
Others leave it and pick it back up in a week or so. This is my first
year to do this so I am not sure what I will do at the end of the year.
MB>HOMESCHOOLERS a legal right to exist without any hassels. I could be
MB>wrong. Alaska might be ok, many kids have to be homeschooled, but use
MB>the state's requirements of books and testing.
I like the fact that PA has a Homeschool Diaploma Program that rewards a
highschool diaploma that has been reconized. In states where there in no
accountablity is GED the only way to go?
Peace,
Cheryl
