Does this happen right at the beginning or only after the first (or 
maybe second) diskette? If this should be the case, then I once had a 
similar experience with an AIC-6360 SCSI board (VLB) with floppy 
connector. It worked with Windows, but under OS/2 after the first 
diskette it suddenly became incredibly slow, making long pauses between 
reads, but still continued (took about half an hour per diskette).
Never found out why; IRQ6 was not otherwise used. Cure was to disable 
floppy and use an extra floppy adapter; this won't help you much with a 
laptop. Can't you boot OS/2 from CD?
