Thanks for the links, I'll check them out.
So in spite of the noises from the drive, there is a greater
liklihood that the MB is causing this?

Since I tried an add-on IDE controller, I thought the MB less
likely.  But there is lots of stuff the MB does that I don't
understand or know about.  Maybe I'll have a better idea of this
after I read the links.
