 Depends on how you define expensive. From a size/cost standpoint
compared to hd's these days it can be, but compared to other industrial
components it's not that bad.

 A sshd (solid state hard drive) w/ a 540meg capacity would run you abt
$300, where as you can get a 180gig regular hd for half that.

 It depends on what you're doing and what kind of conditions your
system is going to have to work under. A sshd isn't going to be hurt
working underwater or in a vacuum, where as those conditions will kill
a regular one. The same thing goes for excessive vibration or g forces.
