Should work if you press during the cold boot. There is a basic GUI-mode
setup (IIRC there was also some kind of advanced "debug mode" on Ctrl+D
or like that).

But I suggest that you outfit yourself with an IBM PC Co.'s Thinkpad
Configuration Utility
(ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/uttpfos2.exe as of last
year) - it is a PM program that actually provides the setup
functionality. It takes some time to set up the 770 series in the right
way, as they are usually packed with a dozen of integrated peripherals.
This means a multi-megabyte driver download will ensue. :-)
