Not being that familiar (read not at all) with PMmail, a few thoughts:

1.  Does it have any sort of logging option.

2.  Start it from a command window.  There may be something that shows.

3.  Try Mozilla mail or some other mail client.  See if there's anything
strange.

4.  Reinstall PMmail or restore (in another directory, if you wish) from a
recent backup without the problem.
