I wholeheartedly agree with the above statement. Win98se will do
anything I want that I cannot do with ECS. (which is actually getting
less over time as ECS IS doing more). Yeah, midi is real weak in my
opinion with ECS, that may or may not change over time.
Win 98 has I think many advantages over later windows releases. One is
that it can copy itself in entirety to anything using xcopy32.exe.
Great way of backing up your system. win98 has the complete msdos
commands where 2000 and above have less commands available. Licenses
can be had for under $20 so with one disk, you can afford to legally
have it on several computers. And it doesn't try to access MS servers
all the time as long as you don't upgrade to the windows media player
version 8 or up. I never put windows on the internet for much other
than maintenance, and store no addresses and set up no mail accounts or
access any in windows. It'll run OK in 64 meg memory, good at 128 and
no improvements above 256. Needs about 300 to 400 megs of hard drive
for the OS itself, with a little more for the swap file. I've turned
off the swap file with 256 meg memory with little effect of operation,
still better to leave it on though.
As for midi software, I picked up this Music Studio software that might
be interesting for what you want to do, it's fairly inexpensive,
haven't had a chance to create something on it yet, here's the website:
