The following was taken from user bitch section of the Corel Web Page.
-----------------------------------------------------
The following is a list of items to check which may help speed up the
functionality of WordPerfect 7 for Windows 95.
Dialog Options
1. Having the Preview option left on in the File Open dialog is the
biggest culprit hurting speed. Leaving this off until needed is
recommended. Many users use Quick View Plus (available via separate
installation from the suite CD) for most viewing. The Preview is
still useful for viewing several files in succession.
2. Using TreeView can also cause some slowness, but this is not as
severe a problem.
3. If the Details option is used, then eliminating the display of the
"Type" column can increase speed. (Right Click on column header and
follow menu prompts to do this.)
4. If Norton's Speedisk is used, set the custom settings to "Move
folders to front." NOTE - this is the Norton Win95 Version of Speeddisk
only, the older DOS version should NOT be run with Win95.

Disk Utilities
1. Run Scandisk or Norton 95 Disk Doctor, correct any problems. Run
Scandisk regularly. Consider putting it into your Startup group. It's
a highly recommended housekeeping method to maintain a clean system.
2. Run a Defrag utility to have the most contiguous drive space
possible. This utility must be specifically designed for Win95 or you
may ruin your FAT information! Defrag at least once, even if it is
indicated that defragging isn't necessary. Thereafter, defrag at least
monthly and sooner if you use your system daily.
3. Check for compressed drives. DriveSpace3 can slow down Windows 95
in some setups (such as 486/33 or 486/66 systems if you elect maximum
compression). Compression of drives containing files only, not programs,
usually doesn't affect speed, but compression of drives containing
programs _can_ impact speed.
Temp Files
1. Temp files must be in a clean and valid directory.
2. Restart the computer in MS-DOS Mode. Type SET at the dos prompt
to verify the variables Tmp and Temp. Be sure both point to a valid
directory. It is best to follow the Win95 default settings and have the
temp directory be \windows\temp rather than placing it elsewhere.
3. While in DOS Mode search for *.tmp files and delete them (from
C:\type dir *.tmp /s). Consider adding a line to your autoexec.bat
file to delete the .TMP files from your TEMP director y at every system
startup. Note, if you already have DEL C: \WIND OWS\T EMP\*. TMP try
changin g it to DEL C: \WIND OWS\T EMP\*. TMP > NUL this should non-int
eractive ly delete any leftover .TMP files at startup of your system,
====================================================================
Drivers
1. Are there multiple device drivers loading? In some cases the same
device may be loaded more than once. Eliminate as many non-essential
device drivers as possible
2. Try running Windows without the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files.
Memory and Disk Space
1. Memory. 8 meg is a minimum and will not provide the best
performance. 16 works fine. 32 gives noticeable improvement for certain
functions such as graphics and tables. Note that memory makes more
difference than processor speed.
2. Typing MEM at the DOS prompt will show how much memory is
available while Windows 95 is running. This reports memory from
physical RAM and the swap file.
3. There should be adequate room on the hard drive where Windows is
loaded to support the swap file. The swap file is different than the
temp directory and both are usually sharing the same drive. A minimum
of 30 megs free disk space should be on this drive. 50 or more is
preferable.
===================================================================
What else is running?
1. When in Windows press Ctrl Alt Delete to see what applications are
running. Close any unnecessary applications.
2. Check how many Fonts are loading. Go to Start| settings| control
panel | Fonts| look in the bottom left corner. If loading more than 200
fonts, try getting the font list down to under 200.

Further Guidance for Windows 95
1. Start Win95 with the F8 key and select to boot with bootlog.txt
being created. This file is created as a hidden file so the user must
unhide it or set explorer to show hidden and system files. Then check
bootlog.txt for any load or initialization failures. Load failures
indicate a configuration problem or a bad file somewhere, which can in
turn, affect speed.
3. Chapter 17 of the Windows 95 Resource Kit suggests some things to
optimize the performance of Windows 95. If the user's Windows 95
environment in general is slow, those issues need to be addressed first
before WordPerfect 7 will run efficiently.

WordPerfect 7 for Windows
Problem / Answer
PROBLEM: There is a long delay when clicking File | Open or on File | Save As
in
WordPerfect 7.0 before the dialog box appears on the screen.
ANSWER: Disabling Tree View and Preview reduces this delay interval by
approximately
90%. To disable, from the pull-down menu in the Open File or Save As Dialog
Box,
click View | Preview | No Preview and verify that Tree View is unselected.
