Ahem. Jean, let me jump right in on this subject, a subject I have a small
amount of experience with.
By legal immigrant, Roland is referring to a legal status conferred by the
Government of the United States upon an individual who has no justifiable
claim to United States citizenship. As opposed to someone who is neither a
"legal immigrant" nor a citizen of this country who either enters this
country illegally, ie. without inspection (EWI) or overstays their
authorized stay (overstay) or accepts gainful employment without legal
authorization.
An introduction to Immigration Law 101, I see, is in order once again.
A. The term "immigrant" connotes legality since an immigrant came to this
country with an immigrant visa, and is therefore, "legal".
B. The term alien as defined by statute relates to someone born outside of
the United States and who does not derrive citizenship.
C. The term "illegal alien" as defined by statute means any alien who is
present in the United States in violation of law. That includes ANYONE from
ANY other country, Canada included. This also includes those aliens who
"immigrated" and who then ran afoul of the law while here (ie. committed a
criminal act) and therefore makes them subject to removal.
D. The percentages of illegal aliens currently present in the United States
IN VIOLATION OF LAW coming from "South of the Border" (ie. Latinos from
Central and South America, including Mexico) far exceed those from other
parts of the world. That is due to the close proximity between Mexico and
the rest of Latin America and the United States. This is a fact, not an
opinion based upon personal biases.
What Roland was addressing was the ILLEGAL ALIEN problem. He is not, from
what I've read, against LEGAL immigration. Or are you suggesting that it's
justifiable for aliens to enter and remain in this country in violation of
the law?
I'll take it one step further than Roland and will assuredly incur your
ire. I believe that the Federation of Immigration Reform's (FAIR) policy
that we should have a five year moratorium on LEGAL immigration is the
correct course to take. We have been overwhelmed for many years.
Application backlogs exist to the point where someone who applies to become
a naturalized citizen in Denver, Colorado has to wait 23 months before
their interview. And it's much worse in the major cities such as New York,
Los Angeles, etc.
We simply cannot absorb the record numbers of people who are coming to this
country, both legally AND illegally. If you have a solution to this
problem, I'd love to hear it. But rest assured that I along with my
co-workers have looked at every possible solution. We just simply cannot
continue at the pace we are currently experiencing.
