subject: subforms revisited

Here's the problem: My main form has a field LCode that is linked to
the subform. It's the key field so duplicate entries generate an
error. If I tab off the LCode field the next control is the subform
control, named SubPlace. The problem occurs when I use an existing
LCode and tab to the subform. I get the error, which is Ok, but then
the subform gets focus and displays its records linked to the LCode
that I can not use. I'd much rather have the LCode keep focus and
set the value to Null. The Form_Error seems to disable any code
attached to LCode's afterupdate.
How do I "disable" the subform and stay on the LCode until a valid
LCode is entered?
