About 25 years ago, while living in Gastonia, N. C., I had the pleasure of
meeting one of the survivors of "Frozen Chosen". He was a Marine Corps
Gunnery
Sergeant doing recruiting duty and later retired there. He subsequently ran
for and was elected Sheriff of Gaston County, which office he held for a
couple
of terms. His name was Waldrop, and he was a class act. His description of
that operation, as I recall, fully supports the account given in the article
you quoted.
I also served at the same base as the 21st TCSq during 1952-5. I was with
the
344th TCSq flying C-46s as a tenant outfit at Tachikawa AB, outside of Tokyo.
The 21st TCSq was based there, and were then equipped with C-54s. At one
point
extending over several months, the C-124s based there were all grounded due
to
in-flight generator fires, and our two units (the 21st and the 344th)
provided
all of the theater air traffic into and out of the Tokyo area. We knew them
to
be a good outfit who always did their jobs well.
Their CO, toward the latter part of my overseas tour in 1955, was a gentleman
named Harry Southside Coleman, who later became the base commander at Seymour
Johnson AFB, Goldsboro, N. C. and, after he retired from the AF, he became
the
City Manager of Goldsboro, N. C.
Funny how a printed story can bring back memories. Thanks for the
opportunity,
Jim.
