I use DSL. It is provided by my ISP, who subleases it from SBC. I
pay extra for a static IP since I had a lot of problems in the past
with dhcp. My system is behind a computer running injoy and
services several other computers, including a wireless connection
for my wife's laptop. When my son is hitting the net hard, and my
wife & I are on I don't notice much degradation of speed, but there
is some.
I like injoy but if I was starting fresh I would probably look at a
router, maybe a switch too. The thing about a router is that there
are plenty of exploits out there and one never knows if they will
hit your router. They have been hitting Cisco fairly consistenly
in the last year, you have to keep it patched. Don't think I will
see that problem with injoy on an os/2 machine. Haven't heard of
problems with consumer routers like linksys, netgear, or belkin.
The only thing I have to say about cable vs DSL is that cable is
like a big water pipe. The more users that turn on the 'tap' the
less comes out the other end. I have a friend with cable and he
can always tell when 6pm rolls around, his connection slows
significantly as everyone comes home from work and jumps online.
I'm sure this phenomenon varies with locale, but it is something to
consider. In the early days of cable there was a problem with
being able to see everyone else on your cable subnet, I've heard
that they fixed that with filters but something else that you
should be aware of.
I agree with what everyone else posted regarding ease of install,
hardware, & speed.
