| subject: | Re: DSL or Cable broadband? |
Hi all,
I selected DSL on the basis of:
1. doesn't share wire with neighbors; reports were that cable slows
down in direct proportion to load imposed by 254 neighbors on the cable
subnet.
2. I wanted unrestricted access; no ports blocked; running servers
allowed.
3. greater upload speeds.
An important consideration for Davey is the different bundle pricing
offered by his cable provider and his phone provider. In the case of
SBC, they offer all the different phone distance packages, and Cingular
cell, with even another price break for combined billing. As someone
else mentioned, "total cost of all services".
I expect the hardware/software setups are essentially the same, and
equally painless; other than the need to apply filtering to other
equipment which shares the DSL pair. Since I have DSL on a separate fax
line, I had to apply only a single filter to the fax, not to all the
voice outlets. Bear in mind that you can filter multiple phones with a
single filter; it's all a matter of where you split off the DSL wire.
In either event, it would help to plan your interior wiring before
committing to one or the other. Both are equally easy for the
handy-person; DSL/phone using regular cat-5 wire and connectors, cable
using standard co-ax.
Firewalling is a different topic all together.
Best wishes on that job!
