subject: bad memory?

I know someone with a gateway astro. Strange little box. One day it
would not turn on, push the (soft) on power button nothing happens. I
suggested stripping it and getting a new computer later. However,
trying sdram memory chip in another computer found it to be so totally
dead as to not even be recognized as plugged in. Could this be the
cause of the astro not turning on? Power supply seems to be OK.
