Following story in Circuits - NY Times today:

A New Card for Notebooks Provides a Blast of Sound
Michel Marriott

Published: October 28, 2004

Notebook computers, once exotic, are increasingly common. And while they
have greatly improved - incorporating smarter microprocessors and
wireless communications capabilities, for example - most have anemic
audio capabilities. Many sound like cheap radios.

Creative Labs, a longtime maker of computer audio components, is
offering an audio upgrade. Unlike comparable upgrades for desktop PC's,
this one does not require opening the computer's case to install a
high-performance sound card.

The PCMCIA Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook card, which is slightly
larger than a credit card, slips into any Windows-based notebook's
PCMCIA slot. Once the included audio software is installed, the upgrade
is complete.

The PCMCIA sound card, which is expected to cost $130 and reach stores
by next week, includes ports for optical in and optical out (for clean
connection to musical instruments and various recording devices) that
double as microphone and headphone jacks. A third port permits the
connection of up to seven speakers and a subwoofer for multichannel
surround sound.

The card's 3-D sound capabilities, a Creative marketing manager said,
work with stereo headphones as well, making them sound better than mere
stereo.

Perhaps it can even help an Ashlee Simpson performance sound live.
