I had dsl back in 1999-2000 and had no problems. I moved and now have
cable as there was no dsl here. Initially when it was owned by {at}Home
they had some routers go down semi regularly. Since ATTBI took them
over I haven't had any downtime that I remember except for a day and a
half where COMCAST (who bought out from ATTBI) disconnected my cable
when they connected someone elses TV line. I am pleased with COMCAST
though I might would change to DSL if it were in my area due to it being
a lower cost.
Hardware-wise there is only really one difference, the cable modem
doesn't have a built in router (I have heard of some now that do but a
couple years ago when I was looking there was only one I saw that did
and I couldn't find anyone that sold it). So I have a cable modem
connecting to a router. Many (most?) routers you can pick up in the
store will have the ability to make the dsl ppoe connection. I still
have the router/modem from my dsl connection as they gave them to us
back then (course it was really high priced service back then) but it is
pretty much worthless without a dsl connection because while it was a
nice router (cisco 675) the only "WAN" connection was the dsl, the only
nic was the one going out to the pc's.
As a general rule, the dsl services I have seen did not have as many
stipulations about not running servers as do the cable services.
