  Yes, but the real mode compatibility requirement has long since been
  dropped.  All device drivers now run in protected mode only.

  It's only Virtual Device Drivers that have to deal with mixed modes,
  and even then they mainly run in "flat" protected mode with the
  occasional dip into "v8086" protected mode.

  They certainly don't have to cope with real mode at all (unlike
  Windows' VxDs).

  Incidentally, VDDs don't necessarily take up any space in the
  "conventional memory" portion of a VDM at all.  Try to find
  \OS2\MDOS\ANSI.SYS, for example.
