Intel Cancels Revamped Chip

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 14 - The Intel Corporation said on Thursday that it
was canceling its plans to market a faster version of its Pentium 4 chip
for personal computers to focus on products with "more bang for the buck."

The move reflects a change in Intel's strategy in developing new chips
after a series of product delays and technical problems earlier in the year.

The new Pentium 4, a 4-gigahertz microprocessor, had already slipped off
schedule, with its original sales date shifted from the end of this year
to some time in early 2005.

Bill J. Kirby, a marketing director in Intel's desktop platforms group,
said the cancellation of the project was part of an overall shifting of
resources to projects with broader demand. The new Pentium 4 was going
to be the fastest chip in the Pentium 4 line and intended for use in
high-end personal computers that require extra speed.

Last spring, Intel discovered that its push to increase the clock speed
of its chips was leading to problems with overheating. As a result, the
company said that it would focus on other ways to improve microprocessor
performance, most notably by stamping multiple processors on a single chip.

This "multicore" approach has quickly become a central focus of Intel's
new strategy, and the first desktop products using it are expected in
the middle of next year.
