I have an LG GSA-4160B dual-layer DVD+-RW drive here in the shop at the
moment, and eCS 1.2 reports its BIOS string as a DVD-RAM - I think LG
is one of the only manufacturers I've seen that are supporting the
DVD-RAM standard. One of their drives came with a DVD-RAM disc, in its
retail packaging, but I've never seen another one... certainly not easy
to locate blank, inexpensive media!

The drive works just fine as a CD-ROM drive (for the software
installs), as expected.

Haven't tested the drive with RSJ yet, but I could. I'll give it a run
with CDRECORD and RSJ in the morning, and even give the DVD-RAM support
a whirl, if that's what you're looking for, specifically.

Any internal ATAPI (parallel ATA) drive can be made an external unit
with an inexpensive kit - haven't tried any of these with eCS 1.2 and
its USB support, but it's only a matter of time.

Free time - what's that again? :)

I suspect any later model will just be a faster revision of an older
one - with no real changes in the variety media types supported, aside
from speed.

Dual layer DVD-R media is still about C$10 per disc (compared to well
under C$1 for 4.7GB DVD-R media) - so the "bleeding edge" is still to
expensive for most, even if the drives theoretically support it.

More news as it happens...
