subject: SOCKS problems

So far as I can see, one of the weaknesses of the SOCKS system is
that it seems to *require* a DNS server that exists on or links
to the outside of the lan.
My guess is your local bind is the problem. In order to get
outside the lan, SOCKS needs to be addressing the external DNS
   server, not your local one.
   May I suggest trying IGATE102?
It's free for a single connection at a time and, despite the
really crappy docs, works fairly well. If you do try it, bear in
mind that the default POP3 proxy he supplies requires a client
that has specific support for a proxy. You're probably best off
to delete his POP3 and use a Mapped Link instead.
Also, SocksCap works...but adds an unwelcome additional measure
of instability to Win95: Better to configure mapped links for
POP3, News and Time, if you need em, and forego SocksCap.
Netscape will work perfectly if you configure it to use the HTTP
and Socks proxies as recommended in the IGate docs.
Configure the DNS proxy to point to the ISP's server, set up host
files on all the clients, and make sure that the clients all have
DNS configured to point to the proxy machine. The proxy machine's
DNS can point to the proxy OR to the external DNS. I point it to
the external so I have quick access to the net from the proxy
   box, if needed.
