I bought an IBM X-jack modem/ethernet adapter several years ago. It
seems to me as if you could plug in EITHER a telephone RJ11 OR an
ethernet RJ45. It had some sort of "guide" that would hold the RJ11 in
place, or move out of the way for the RJ45. Obviously, there was
"intelligence" built into it that differentiated between the two types.
The X-jack was convienent in that you weren't screwed if you forgot the
dongle, but it was a little more awkward, somewhat more difficult to
plug and unplug and seemed rather fragile. Of course, with dongles,
there's always the stupid problem of forgetting the dongle and leaving
it in a hotel room. =]
