RL> >called Rummy. With this game he is forced to concentrate, put cards in
RL>Cards games are a great learning tool. I have been using them for
Saw Card games and also the word Rummy. There is a card game called
RUMMY ROOTS that has Greek and Latin roots that the kids use in a card
game. One card will have the English, another the Latin or Greek, and
you can make matches, or you can use the Greek and Latin cards to make
words. It comes with several game variations one can use to learn them.
My kids like the game. You can order the game from Great Christian
Books. Also a good source for ordering other materials for
homeschooling. I printed out the English then a dash then the Greek or
Latin word(s), covered with clear contact paper. The game comes with one
copy of all the meanings and such, but with 2-5 of us playing, would
make it hard for us to look them up on that one paper, plus wear and
tear would ruin it.
We have also used songs to learn State capitals, songs for learning
geography, math, and grammer. You can call AUDIO MEMORY PUB. at 800-365
SING. Tapes are reasonably priced.
One short GRAMMER song from the GRAMMER tape:
                       SENTENCE SONG
Every sentence has a subject and the subject does something in the
present, or the future or the past. Every sentence has a subject and the
subject does something and remember that the period comes last. It can
be a question. It can be a statement. It can also be an exclaimation.
Then it has some excerises afterwards for the kids to do. There are 16
songs on the tape, one of the songs is a Greek and Latin Prefix and
Suffix song. We like them. Has a catchy tune, so it's not boring to
sing. It's neat to hear my 4 year old singing them as if it was a TOP
10 song . (This applies to ALL the singing/learning tapes we use).
The GEOGRAPHY SONGS tape has the countries by division, like the Middle
East. It has a map with all songs. The MIDDLE EAST song:
The Middle East has Israel, Iran, Iraq,
      Bahrain, North Yemen, Kuwait,
      Saudia Arabia, Oman, Qatar,
      United Arab Emirates,
      Yemen and Cyprus,
      Jordan and Lebanon,
      Turkey and Syria too-
      16 countries of Southwest Asia-
      Muslims, Christians and Jews.
The song even have that "Middle Eastern" music in it to help remember.
This tape also has the States of the USA on it, so you don't have to buy
the seperate USA (STATE CAPITOLS/STATES SONG) tape, unless you want a
song for the capitols. We did, so I bought the extra tape. In the back
of the booklet of the Geo. tape(s) is questions/tests for the kids to
do. You could either buy extra books, one for each child, or let them
share, writing the answers on paper. We have two copies of the books,
because I had two doing them at the same time, letting them write the
answers out on seperate sheets of paper so my next two kids can use the
books. Try to save pennies where I can .
TWIN SISTERS PRODUCTIONS has tapes for math, MULT. DIV. ADD. AND SUB.
called RAP WITH THE FACTS. I typed out the math facts, one side with the
answers one side without. I then used clear contact paper to cover it.
The kids liked drilling the facts this way. Ya can call 800-248-TWIN.
The tapes do come with the words printed on the tape inserts. Sad thing
about these is the print is so small, and not useful if you have more
than one child using the tapes at the same time. Also, the inserts
would wear out quickly, coming apart at the folds. Your choice if you
want to print out everything they say, I think the kids can catch on to
what they sing easily enough, especially if you have the facts printed
out for them.
I would honestly say we cut out the learning these things by a quarter
of the time, if not more. Yes, sometimes it takes the kids a second or
two to come up with the tune to some of the grammer or geography songs,
but how many kids can rattle off the 57 countries of Africa, without
missing one? My kids now can, and say the names correctly, which would
have been a problem for me if not for the tapes. One song I was so
grateful for is the FORMER USSR song. How in the world would I have
figured out how to say Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan?
The STATES/STATE CAPITOL songs has a large map we hung on the wall.
But, the GEOGRAPHY tape has the map in it, it was easier for the kids to
hold the book when they listened to the tape, and use the large wall map
to sing the songs without the tape for testing with mom (ME!). The
STATES is divided into NORTHERN BORDER, SOUTHERN BORDER, EASTERN BORDER
and the MIDDLE of the US.
          EASTERN BORDER
The Eastern border of the United States, the Eastern border of the
United States- Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina,
Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode
Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine.
I'm done . Hope this helps someone.
