Thanks, will have to do some 'research'!  
I'd completely forgotten the Heat aspect of IR.

I've been using my digital camera to 'view' remote control units to see if
they put out IR.  Works great for that.  

Now I've got four dead VCRs, at least one of which has some VERY hot
capacitors in the PS section.  Some non-flash pictures in the dark might
prove interesting!
