I'm also in the throes of an upgrade - the machine going out is an AMD
K6-300 or 333 (not sure) also on a Tyan S1590, but there are a couple of
differences between my situation and Phil's.
1. The K6 machine is alive and well, but just slow. My good wife
deserves better.
2. However, she is not getting the newest. She will get my Athlon 1.8
GHz machine with an Epox mobo, 512meg of ECC memory, and a larger hard
drive to replace a 6 gig in her machine (the other is 40 gig and will
remain).
I'm getting an Athlon 64 on an Asus K8 VSE Delux - also with 512 meg of
ECC, a new SATA Seagate 80gig drive, and a DVD burner (the CD burner won't
hack backups any more now that things have gone to 5 CDs of zip files :-(
There's going to be a lot of drive movement in this process, and I'm
violating one of the fundamental rules of computing (don't do a hardware
and a software upgrade at the same time) but I plan to install a clean eCS
1.2 on my new machine as a maint partition on the SATA drive, and then
unzip the backup of my boot partiton [ecs 1.1] onto the new primary boot
partition and do another install using the migration mechanism.
Once I get that stabilized, I will then move drives into and out of the
current ATX case to prepare it to become the new machine for my wife.
Hopefully eCS 1.1 will boot up on the new mobo/cpu with not a lot of
grief, but I think that the W2k install will need to be done all over
again :-(
Progress reports (probably in the form of frantic pleas for help:-( will
be sporadically posted. The process should begin towards the end of the
month.

Why does the hardware keep getting faster, and the software slower?
