its a case of whether the returns justify the hassles, you would be stupid
to sack you star programmer just because (s)he habitually turned up 10 mins
late in the morning. one of lifes little tasks is to accurately assess your
contribution to the system so that you know how much you can buck it.
back in the days when the computer industry was actually fun to work in, it
wasn't uncommon to find that the most brilliant support people were also
highly erratic characters. they were simply kept in cages well away from
customers until a problem requiring their talents occurred, and then let
loose on it. one guy that i worked with was threatened with the sack every
week for his style of dress (hawaiian shirt, baggy shorts, and thongs) but
the management knew, as he did, that they wouldn't sack him, his
contribution was just so great. in fact there was mass panic when he
eventually resigned.
of course, if you aspire to megabucks as a salesman/marketeer or manager,
you have to suss out the rules and wear an ammani suit and get a 110 ohm
nose. i've never bothered to try, i just cant stand the taste of shit.
