OS/2 replaces the boot sector, which is the first sector of the logical
volume. When the machine is booted, the BIOS ROM loads the first physical
sector of the hard drive, which is called the master boot record
("MBR"). The MBR contains a little program that loads the first
sector of the logical volume, called the boot sector. The boot sector is
the first difference between DOS and OS/2.

With DOS, the boot sector has another small program that loads IO.SYS and
MSDOS.SYS (or, in some cases, IBMBIO.COM and IBMDOS.COM). With OS/2, the
boot sector instead tries to load OS2BOOT. If OS2BOOT cannot be found,
then you get the cryptic error messages such as "OS/2 !!
SYS01475," "OS/2 !! SYS02025," and "OS/2 !!
SYS02027." These mean, respectively:

SYS1475: The file OS2BOOT cannot be found.
SYS2025: A disk read error occurred.
SYS2027: Insert a system diskette and restart the system.

When you boot DOS from a floppy and use the SYS.COM program to make C:
bootable with the "SYS C:" command, the necessary DOS boot sector
is installed.

Well, there was deleting OS/2...
