Hi Anthony,

AW> When someone comes in late, it's always going to be an important excuse

AW> rather than just "I felt tired and slept in", or "I
try and squeeze the

AW> most amount of sleep in by catching the last possible train, and if it's

AW> 10 minutes late, then I'm late". And when someone comes in late, then

AW> it's taken as an excuse for others to come in late.

AM>Would you prefer it if someone said "well I just felt tired and slept

AM>in instead of whatever else it is they come out with that probably is

AM>grossly exaggerated?

I would prefer it. I'd say "thanks for being candid" as I aimed a size

12 boot at their date.

AW> The best thing about the Navy was the fact that you could be

AW> charged if you were so much as a minute late.

AM>Nothing quite like controlling the masses with a few threats of

AM>punishment. What's the point of it all? More to the point, what the

AM>relevance of that attitude to the real world where people DO have to

AM>catch unreliable trains, cars, busses, ferries, bring up children,

AM>rescue that cat from the dog next door, etc etc etc. Military

AM>*ideals* are not natural for a majority of the population, and are not

AM>the way people like to be treated, given a choice.

If the train is unreliable, catch an earlier one. Same for the other

transports. The bike has never let me down BTW. In fact my seat

broke off a few weeks ago, and I still got to work on time (had to

remember not to sit down though ;-) )

If you have to rescue the cat, you ring in and explain the problem and

take a days leave. Sick leave is also a ripoff, and rorted by everyone.

In the navy, you had to have a certificate stating you were unfit to

travel, which meant you were on deaths bed. Nowadays any doctor will

give out a certificate saying you've got urinary tract disease or some

such thing. Certainly not serious enough to take warrant day of.

Regards, Alan.
