Generally the answer is 1280 x 1024 x 4 (32-bit) x 2 (double page) =
10M, rounded up to 16M. Unsure if DVD and virtual screens can make any
more extensive use for video RAM. For an off-screen buffer (a scrollable
virtual screen), those 10M should be definitely multiplied again by a
certain factor.

I would hardly expect any problems with a 16-meg G450 (aren't 16M the
absolute minimum for G450?), and the rule you mention seems to be
reduced into an exception today - just noticed that newer SNAPs leave me
with a 800x600 screen instead of 1024x768 in 32-bit mode on a Trident
9397 (4M RAM).
